Preparing for Managing Pumpkin Diseases in 2021

  • 01/25/2021
  • 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM
  • ROOM THREE

Dr. Mohammad Babadoost, University of Illinois Crop Sciences

Many biotic and abiotic diseases occur in pumpkin fields in the Midwest. However, the most common diseases of pumpkins are Phytophthora blight (Phytophthora capsici), powdery mildew (Podosphaera xanthii), downy mildew (Pseudoperonospora cubensis), and bacterial spot (Xanthomonas cucurbitae). We have developed effective strategies for managing Phytophthora blight, powdery mildew, and downy mildew. Managing bacterial spot in pumpkin and winter squash, however, is still a challenging task. We are intensively investigating the etiology and epidemiology of this disease and making progress on its management.
